Horrocks couple No. 1 in marriage longevity in Lehi
City Editor
Cathy Allred
A modest crowd attended the Lehi Marriage Week event on Feb. 11 at the Lehi Senior Center.
"Marriage is a gift," said Chuck Lovelady, pastor of the Timpanogos Baptist Church, at the program's invocation."It is a gift of God."
Hosted by Rick and Linda Turner and co-sponsored by the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce, the organizers honored three couples at the program for their longevity in marriage -- Roland and Thelma Horrocks, 68; Keith and Maxine Powell, 67 years; and Bill and Bernice Price, 67 years.
Married in November 1936, the Horrocks live at the Greenwood Assisted Living Center together.
They lived most of their lives in Salt Lake City until 18 months ago, when they moved to live with Lynn and Carolyn Horrocks in Lehi.
Roland Horrocks, 92, was a stereotypist for a newspaper agency. Thelma Horrocks was a homemaker. With three sons, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, the couple are devoted to each other and are inseparable.
The Chamber of Commerce, represented by its director Heather Miller, awarded the Horrocks with gift passes to Thanksgiving Point's Harvest and Gardens, a Northern Light Photography deluxe photo shoot, a Flowers On Main gift certificate, Pioneer Party and Copy gift basket and other items.
Best Western Timpanogos Inn also contributed a one night stay for a winning couple at its deluxe motel. Some 49 couples were nominated for the contest, with each married 50 years or more.
Jonathan D. Sherman was the guest speaker. An Eagle Mountain resident, the marriage expert presented nine rules for fair fighting in a relationship and reviewed key points on how to make a good marriage great.
Two city dignitaries attended, the mayor and his wife, Ken and Rita Greenwood; and a councilman and his wife, Johnny and Amy Barnes. Rita Greenwood read the city's proclamation on Lehi families and Lehi Family Week, while Amy Barnes read the proclamation on Lehi Marriage Week.

LMW thank you
North County Newspapers
Editor:
On behalf of the Lehi Community Council we would like to express thanks to the many member organizations that helped make this week a success. This includes the Chamber of Commerce, Churches (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St.Peter's Catholic Church in American Fork, and Timpanogos Baptist Church), Lehi Free Press, and Lehi City (Mayor and City Council, and Senior Center).
We also want to express our appreciation to Melanie Reese, the Executive Director of The Governor's Commission on Marriage, for lending us a display and free handouts for the Friday event as well as the Marriage Week Banner that has been displayed across Main Street at the east end of town. Also a special thanks to the Power Dept. for hanging the banner so well.
Special thanks go to Jonathan Sherman from Bardos Relationship Consulting for his fine presentation, and Brandt and Shirley Gibson for their lovely duet at the Friday event.
Special thanks also go to Thanksgiving Point, North Light Photography, Flowers On Main, Louise Harris, Best Western Timpanogos Inn, and Pioneer Party and Copy for providing the prizes for the winners of the search for the longest married couples in Lehi, Eagle Mountain, and Saratoga Springs; and to Kohler's Food Store, Lehi Country Bakery, and the Turner Family Kitchen for providing the delicious refreshments.

National Marriage Week has been celebrated in the United Kingdom since 1998 and the Governor's Commission on Marriage has been promoting the celebrating of Marriage Week USA in the United States since 2002. I especially like two quotes regarding marriage week. The first comes from the Proclamation for Lehi Marriage Week where it urges "each husband and wife in Lehi City to reflect upon their marriage and to commit to building and maintaining a healthy, loving marriage and family."
The second was made by Cardinal Thomas J. Winning of the Archdiocese of Glasgow with respect to the celebration of National Marriage Week in the United Kingdom "Never in our history has there been more need for support for marriage than today. Happy, lifelong marriages are the building bricks of a caring, compassionate and civilized society. The Church regards every married couple as VIPs -- upon them depend the happiness and well-being of their children and the future of our country. National Marriage Week is a welcome reminder of how important it is that we should support marriage through fiscal, political, social and spiritual means."
It is my hope that we take these two quotes to heart in helping strengthen marriages in Lehi.
